{"id":539,"date":"2010-02-12T13:56:03","date_gmt":"2010-02-12T18:56:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nylinuxhelp.com\/blogs\/?p=539"},"modified":"2010-02-12T13:56:03","modified_gmt":"2010-02-12T18:56:03","slug":"favorite-linux-apps-text-editors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nylinuxhelp.com\/blogs\/linux-apps\/favorite-linux-apps-text-editors","title":{"rendered":"Favorite Linux Apps: Text Editors"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Linux Gui Applications to write and edit text<\/h2>\n<p>For simple stuff I recommend <strong>Gedit<\/strong> that comes with GNOME-based Linux distros.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re running a K-Desktop Environment (KDE) then <strong>Kate<\/strong> is really good.\u00a0\u00a0 Gedit works well for writing quick text snippets or copying text from websites to use later on.<\/p>\n<p>For text writing in general, I like <strong><a title=\"Pyroom, the distraction-free editor\" href=\"http:\/\/pyroom.org\/download.html\" target=\"_blank\">Pyroom<\/a><\/strong> which came pre-installed with <strong>Crunchbang Linux<\/strong> 9.04 and I happen to be writing this very blog post using Pyroom.\u00a0 Pyroom reminds me of a typewriter interface\u2014everything else on the screen (except for your text and a light border) is invisible.\u00a0 Nothing to distract your eyes. \u00a0You only see the words that you type (non-formatted) on your (virtual) page.\u00a0 Each time you hit &#8220;return&#8221;, your work just scrolls upward.\u00a0 And it can &#8220;<strong>auto-save<\/strong>&#8221; your work at intervals that you set in preferences.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re going to write scripts in various programming languages, then you&#8217;ll need a decent IDE-style code editor.\u00a0 This comes in handy if you&#8217;re building a website, because you can create a &#8220;project&#8221; file that will group together the text-based files related to your website.<\/p>\n<p>For this type of work, I use <strong><a title=\"Geany Text Editor for Linux\" href=\"http:\/\/www.linuxinsider.com\/story\/Geanys-Almost-Magical-Text-Editing-Capabilities-69142.html\" target=\"_blank\">Geany<\/a><\/strong>, but have recently installed <a title=\"Aptana Studio, the leading IDE for web app development\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aptana.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Aptana Studio<\/strong><\/a> to try it out.<\/p>\n<p>The benefit of an IDE-style editor is that it can color the syntax so your commands don&#8217;t look like a big vat of text.\u00a0 This makes reading, writing, documenting (or &#8220;in-code comments&#8221;) and troubleshooting your work much much easier.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Linux Gui Applications to write and edit text For simple stuff I recommend Gedit that comes with GNOME-based Linux distros.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re running a K-Desktop Environment (KDE) then Kate is really good.\u00a0\u00a0 Gedit works well for writing quick text snippets or copying text from websites to use later on.
