{"id":238,"date":"2010-01-12T11:50:36","date_gmt":"2010-01-12T16:50:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nylinuxhelp.com\/blogs\/?p=238"},"modified":"2012-11-13T10:37:15","modified_gmt":"2012-11-13T15:37:15","slug":"useful-commands-introduction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nylinuxhelp.com\/blogs\/command-line\/useful-commands-introduction","title":{"rendered":"Useful Commands: introduction"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Learning useful shell commands help save time &amp; effort.<\/h2>\n<p>Do you have to use the command line?\u00a0 No, you don&#8217;t have to use it.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t use it much when I started using Linux.\u00a0 But, in my opinion, learning useful shell commands helps you get the most out of Linux.<\/p>\n<h2>What are some benefits of using the Command Line?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>When you need help from the Linux community, many helpful solutions are expressed as commands to be run in the terminal.\u00a0 It&#8217;s done this way for simplicity, accuracy, and consistency.\u00a0 Many <strong>graphical-based (GUI) programs<\/strong> <strong>are<\/strong> &#8220;front-ends&#8221; where a user <strong>triggers<\/strong> events (via menu choices &amp; button clicks) <strong>that execute terminal-based commands<\/strong> in the background.<\/li>\n<li>Many<strong> jobs<\/strong> in the IT and web development field <strong>require candidates to be comfortable on the command line<\/strong>.\u00a0 This implies the ability to issue shell commands and use console-based text editors such as <a title=\"The VI editor has powerful features to aid programmers\" href=\"http:\/\/www.susnet.co.uk\/mastering-the-vi-editor.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>vi<\/strong><\/a> and <a title=\"A Tutorial Introduction to Emacs\" href=\"http:\/\/www2.lib.uchicago.edu\/keith\/tcl-course\/emacs-tutorial.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>emacs<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 Some jobs will also require you to understand (and perhaps troubleshoot) pre-written shell scripts in many languages.<\/li>\n<li>For repetitive tasks, <strong>using the command line is<\/strong> just plain <strong>faster<\/strong>.\u00a0 Why wait for a GUI program to open, click on things, or browse for file(s) to manipulate one file at a time?\u00a0 You could simply type one or more commands [and options] into a prompt to accomplish the same.\u00a0 When you find yourself issuing the same commands a few times, it becomes apparent to save these command calls in a text-based file (a shell script) to make the process even faster.\u00a0 More on this to come.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Learning useful shell commands help save time &amp; effort.
