{"id":143,"date":"2010-01-04T12:26:22","date_gmt":"2010-01-04T17:26:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nylinuxhelp.com\/blogs\/?p=143"},"modified":"2010-01-04T12:26:22","modified_gmt":"2010-01-04T17:26:22","slug":"partitioning-for-linux","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nylinuxhelp.com\/blogs\/install-linux\/partitioning-for-linux","title":{"rendered":"Partitioning for Linux"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Partitioning<\/strong> is a drive-setup process where you designate areas of your hard drive as &#8220;mount points&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on the situation, you can partition the drive as you&#8217;re installing Linux, or set up the drive first, (using a utility CD such as <a title=\"GParted Partitioning Utility CD\" href=\"http:\/\/www.linux.com\/archive\/articles\/53924\" target=\"_blank\">GParted<\/a> or other).\u00a0 For a single-boot setup, I suggest using the Install CD&#8217;s partitioning tool if you&#8217;re wiping out the old operating system or replacing one Linux distro with another.\u00a0\u00a0 If you&#8217;re adding Linux (to create a dual-boot machine with MS Windows or Mac OS-X) then you should <strong>attend to the partitioning chores first<\/strong>.\u00a0 More on dual booting later.<\/p>\n<p>Partitioning can intimidate newcomers, but fear not.\u00a0 The Linux install process is flexible, and you <strong>don&#8217;t have to<\/strong> <strong>manually create partitions for single boot setup<\/strong>.\u00a0 The install CD may offer suggestions (depends on distro) or at the very least have an  &#8220;automatic partitioning&#8221; feature that works fine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Manual partitioning<\/strong>, on the other hand, is worth learning.\u00a0 Even the basic &#8220;3 partition&#8221; scheme (\/, swap, and \/home) offers the <strong>advantage of not losing your documents<\/strong> if you replace your distro.\u00a0 While you should make frequent backups of your files anyway, common advice from the Linux community suggests <strong>keeping \/home on its own partition<\/strong> for that very reason.\u00a0 Find a <a title=\"Linux Partition HOWTO\" href=\"http:\/\/tldp.org\/HOWTO\/Partition\/\" target=\"_blank\">partitioning tutorial here.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Partitioning is a drive-setup process where you designate areas of your hard drive as &#8220;mount points&#8221;.
